According to the Atlanta Constitutional Journal, a relatively high profile Georgia brain injury case was filed recently. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are four inmates at a prison in northwest Georgia, who are seeking damages from the state resulting from injuries inflicted upon them by guards at the correctional facility.
The prisoners who have filed the suit allege that, on August 12, they began to react in protest when through their dormitory window, they witnessed officers mistreating other inmates. An officer was injured in the incident they witnessed. This, according to the lawsuit, was the catalyst for the more full-scale abuses that took place afterward, allegedly in retaliation against the population in general. Ten guards and two supervisors are implicated in the matter.
The inmates claim that the beatings they received were unprovoked and that they occurred after they were placed in handcuffs. Two inmates may have received neurological damage, including one closed-head injury, and three were allegedly beaten unconscious. The supervisors named in the suit are accused of failing to intervene in the beatings and in fact directing, inciting, and encouraging the assaults. The inmates are seeking compensatory and punitive damages for their injuries.
