DUI Accident Kills Georgia College Student

Date: October 6, 2011By: Atlanta Motorcycle Accident Attorneys

A student at the University of West Georgia (UWG) was reportedly killed on Saturday when his motorcycle struck the side of a car that had improperly turned. Twenty-year-old Matthew Benjamin Dyas was riding his motorcycle on Lovvorn Road outside the entrance to the UWG football stadium when a car driven by an reportedly intoxicated Gloria Faith Dupree turned left into the path of Dyas’ motorcycle, according to the Times-Georgian. The accident occurred less than an hour before UWG’s homecoming football game against Henderson State.

Matthew Dyas, 20, was a junior and a golfer at the University of West Georgia after transferring from Georgia Southern. He was from Acworth and attended Harrison High School. Gloria Dupree, a 23-year-old from Allenhurst, was charged with failure to yield while turning left, first degree vehicular homicide, and driving under the influence (DUI), according to reports. She was taken to the Carroll County jail.

Driving under the influence is a serious problem in both Georgia and the United States. In the United States, 2009 saw an estimated 10,839 fatalities from alcohol-impaired crashes, accounting for 32% of all traffic deaths. In Georgia in 2008, 28% of traffic fatalities were alcohol-related. The southeast is one of the worst areas of the country in this area, with Florida at 29%, Alabama and Tennessee at 30-33%, and South Carolina at 44%. If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident with a driver under the influence, contact a knowledgeable Atlanta DUI accident lawyer to receive the justice you deserve.

Motorcycle accidents are also a difficult problem in Georgia and the country, as the nature of motorcycles makes their riders more prone to accidents and injuries. It is a common misconception that the motorcycle is the cause of most accidents, because most motorcycle accidents are actually the fault of the other driver. Furthermore, there is a 98 percent chance of injury in a motorcycle crash. If you or a loved one has been involved in a motorcycle accident, contact a dedicated Atlanta motorcycle attorney to see if you are eligible for compensation for your injuries, medical bills, and lost wages.
