Feds Pass New Bus Safety Measures to Help Prevent Bus Accidents

Date: May 31, 2011By: Atlanta Bus Accident Lawyers

The United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) has recently released new bus safety measures, adding to other recent actions undertaken to prevent serious accidents. Under these new regulations, the U.S. DOT will begin more rigorous testing for commercial driver’s licenses, research and find new policies that will improve passenger carrier and driver compliance with federal safety regulations, allow passengers to check the safety records and ratings of companies, and ramp up unannounced bus safety inspections.

Some of the greatest concerns in the past were:

  • Bus companies could simply become “reincarnated” under a different name after a major accident
  • Drivers were sometimes still permitted to operate a bus despite violating drug or alcohol laws in a different automobile
  • Buses could operate for up to 18 months without a safety evaluation

Though these troubles are addressed in the new provisions, there are still some bus safety problems that exist. CBS News states that until the Feds pass regulations requiring buses to have reinforced windows and roofs as well as seat belts for passengers, bus safety will continue to be inadequate.

The nature of buses often puts passengers, other automobiles, and pedestrians in increased danger. Though these new bus safety laws will hopefully decrease the occurrence of serious accidents, they will not prevent them all. If you are involved in a car or bus accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. Atlanta automobile accident attorneys will relentlessly fight to protect your rights and obtain the highest form of justice for you or your loved one.
