A Pooler, Georgia McDonalds has reopened one day after ten people were overcome with toxic fumes emanating from the facility’s bathroom. According to CBS News, one of these victims has died as a result. Anne Felton, 80, of Ponte Verda, Fla. reportedly passed away early on Thursday after being found unconscious in the bathroom of the fast food chain restaurant. In addition to Felton, one other customer was found unconscious in the bathroom and eight more experienced trouble breathing, according to reports. Eight people, including three firefighters, were treated and shortly released and two were admitted, of which one has died. The other is listed as in good condition.
According to authorities, the fumes were created from a bad chemical reaction when employees mixed cleaning chemicals, but a further investigation by authorities and by McDonalds is ongoing. The restaurant was immediately evacuated and twenty people, including employees, were put through decontamination by the Savannah Hazardous Materials Response Team to ensure their safety and that of other customers. Nine fire units and nine ambulances rushed to the scene, as well as the hazmat team. After authorities tested the air and deemed it was safe to reopen, McDonalds released a statement saying “The safety of our customers and employees is always a priority. We wish everyone involved a speedy recovery.”
