In a rather bizarre series of events, a bicyclist has finally received closure after the driver that hit him was identified through DNA found on the suspect’s car. In July, 41-year-old Marco Garcia was riding his bicycle in Glen Burnie, Maryland when he was struck by a car that fled after the accident. According to ABC News, police were called to a Walmart parking lot to check on a vehicle that fit witness descriptions of the vehicle involved in the accident. Police found the vehicle with significant frontal damage, towed it, and tested the vehicle for DNA evidence. DNA found on the car matched Garcia, and the driver was charged with a series of offenses related to the hit-and-run accident. Garcia was treated at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center
The man charged in the hit-and-run accident is 57-year-old John Harrison Correlli of Baltimore, who now faces a series of charges related to the accident. Correlli was just charged by police with failing to stay at the scene of a collision, failing to return to the scene, negligent driving, leaving the scene of a collision that caused serious bodily injury without rendering aid, and failing to pass safely (at a distance of at least three feet) when overtaking a bicycle.
The series of events that resulted in justice for the injured cyclist is undoubtedly positive, but these circumstances only further illustrate the common occurrences of both hit-and-run driving accidents and automobile-bicycle accidents. Though many efforts have been undertaken within states and nationwide, bicycle crashes remain a serious problem in communities around the country. Accidents between automobiles and bicycles can be catastrophic for the cyclist, as a cyclist is particularly vulnerable on the road.
