After striking a car in a Dawson County Kroger parking lot, the 20-year-old driver of a pickup truck reportedly tried to escape, only to barrel into a power pole. According to the Gainesville Times, the pole fell down, crushing the pickup and trapping a 13-year-old girl inside. Because the pickup was pushed against a pole with live wires, the girl was not able to be freed for almost two hours and had to be flown to Atlanta Egleston Children's Hospital. The girl remains in serious condition. Additionally, the crash knocked out power for a significant portion of the surrounding area.
The driver reportedly faces a long list of charges for his actions on Monday night and is currently being held in Dawson County jail. These charges include driving with an expired license, serious injury by vehicle, hit-and-run, improper lane change, reckless driving, and driving too fast for conditions. Officers believe that driving on an expired license may have been the driver’s motive to flee the scene of the fender bender. The accident occurred near Harmony Church Road and Ga. 400 at 11 p.m. on Monday night.
After the hit-and-run the police were alerted of a pickup attempting to get away. A deputy saw the driver leave the parking lot onto Georgia Highway 53, where he then followed the Ford F-150 to Lumpkin Campground Road. The driver crossed Ga. 400 then lost control of the truck and hit the pole, about a mile away from the Kroger parking lot where the scene began, according to reports.
