While riding his motorcycle, an Atlanta resident was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The accident occurred when a 23-year-old allegedly turned into the path of the motorcycle with his Pontiac G6 just before midnight on August 6th, 2011.
Investigators report that the driver had his 16-year-old brother and one other person in the car with him at the time of the accident. According to local news channels, he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, failure to yield, vehicular homicide in the first degree, and driving with an open container.
Though motorcycles make up only 2% of registered vehicles in the United States, riders are 37 times more likely to suffer a fatal traffic accident than passengers in an automobile. According to the Hurt report (also known as “Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures”) most motorcycle accidents in happen at intersections, where passenger vehicles violate right-of-way regulations.
